Worship
This is an interior shot of the Theatinerkirche in Odeonsplatz. Initially I was waiting for the two women to move so that I would have an unobstructed shot down the aisle. Then I saw that their pose and the contrast between the darkness of their clothing and the brightness of the church would make a better picture.

Sun
This was taken looking back over Tutzing from the lake towards the sun which was a giant golden ball in the sky - something that this image brings out even more.

Ceiling
Part of the ceiling and light fixture from the Maximilian Kolbe church. I was drawn to the geometry of this image - triangles, diamonds, circles, octagons and more.

Maximilian Kolbe
Neuperlach, as the name suggests, is a new district of the city. To serve the new residential and business community new churches have also been built. This is the entrance to the Catholic church of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, named for a Polish preist who was murderd in Auschwitz. Nearby is the new Lutheran church, named for Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor who was also a victim of the Nazis.

Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche
Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche stands between the A9 and the A99, the only reminder of the community of Fröttmaning. The church is not easy to find, standing in isolation on a spit of parkland between the two motorways and across from the Allianz Arena. There is evidence of a church on this site as early as 815, though most of the current structure is built in the Romanesque style and dates from the early 13th century. The church came close to disappearing along with the rest of Fröttmaning when the autobahns in this area were under construction and it was only saved following a public campaign.
Today the church comes under the authority of the parish of St Albert - Freimann.

Haze
On a hazy Munich morning I climbed the 300 steps to the top of the tower of St Peter's church. This is the view looking towards the south. The twin towers on the right are from the Maximilianskirche while the single spire on the left belongs to the Mariahilfkirche.12 August 2009

St George's Interior
This is the interior of Saint George's church in the Bogenhausen district. It's a small church, built in the 1760's in Baroque style, by Johann Michael Fischer whose churches and monasteries can be found across Bavaria. The main altar visible in this picture is by the sculpor Johann Baptist Straub who often worked with Fischer. Unfortunately it isn't possible to get closer than this because the main body of the church is kept locked.

Frauenkirche 2
Probably the most famous building in Munich, the city's Cathedral dominates the skyline and features on everything from book marks to beer mugs. The building dates from the late 15th century and was built in the high gothic style. The original design envisaged pointed spires on top of the towers but these were never built and the domes were eventually added around 30 years after the church was consecrated.
The south tower (on the right of this image) is accessible and provide excellent views over the city. Since the picture was taken the north tower has been enveloped in scaffolding for restoration work which has the look of a very long term project.
Like most of Munich's central buildings the church was heavily damaged during the second world war and was gradually restored over the following years.

Theatinerkirche at Night
The Baroque Theatinerkirche was commissioned by the Bavarian royal family in 1662 to celebrate the birth of Max Emanuel, the crown prince. The church was designed by the Italian architect Agostino Barelli and completed by his successor as court architect Enrico Zuccalli. Zucalli was responsible for the two towers which were not part of Barelli's original plan. The church dominates Odeonsplatz, one of the major public squares in Munich. Across the square from the church is the Hofgarten, free of street lights and other distractions, from where I took this picture.

Classic
We stopped in this small village on a visit to the Berchtesgaden area in the south of Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the village, but this is the classic picture to take while visiting. There are even signs pointing you to the best spot to get your picture.

Herz Jesu Kirche
Many of the churches in central Munich were badly damaged during the Second World War and then meticulously reconstructed. The original Herz Jesu church in Neuhausen was one of these. However, a fire in 1994 totally destroyed the reconstructed church. At this point the church authorities decided to launch an architectural competition to design a new church to be built on the same site. This striking and original building is the result.
