The weather warmed sufficiently last week to melt away the snow. In the last few days temperatures dropped again and the snow returned. This was the scene in Petuel Park this afternoon.

Red Jacket

Munich Photography Club
Munich is flat. Even from the top of this very small hill it is possible to look down on the city. The hill was created from the materials excavated to create Riemer Park. These folks are part of our expat photography group that meets up every couple of weeks.09 October 2009

Riem Park
A view of the flat expanses of Riem park in the east of the city. It's built on the site of the old Munich airport and seems to have been designed to replicate some of the shapes and patterns of an airfield. I have heard some people criticise it for being too uniform butI like itssimplicity.17 August 2009
Petanque
The gravel paths of the Hofgarten are home to Munich's petanque players - though I'm never sure if I should call it petanque or boules or something else. In the spring, summer and autumn, often despite the weather, there are always a few groups playing; on sunny days two sides of the garden are lined with players. Quite a few bring tables and chairs, piucnic hampers, crates of beer and bottles of wine and are there for the day.24 July 2009
Botanical Gardens
Munich's Botanical Garden was founded in 1812 and moved to its current location, next to Nymphenburg Palace, in 1914. The 50 acre site holds around 14,000 species and also has an extensive collection of greenhouses.The building pictured here is the site of the Bavarian State Botany Collection - a world renowned research institute - and houses a herbarium holding 3 million dried plant specimens from around the world.

Dandelion
Before Franz Josef Strauß Airport opened in 1992 the city's airport was at Riem in the east of the city. A comprehensive redevelopment plan for the Riem area was drawn up with the new Munich Exhibition Centres and Trade Fair at its core.The plan also included a new park which was designed by French landscape architect Gilles Vexlard and created between 1997 and 2005. This sculpture stands near the lake. When I first saw it I was reminded of a dandelion ready to shed its seeds. I have been told that it is actually a "multi-directional multi-frequency cubical quad antenna." I'm sticking with my dandelion image.
