Suspended

The new Line 23 crosses the Mittlerer Ring on its way to the Frankfurter ring. Normally the trams have their own traffic lights at existing junctions, but in this case the line doesn't follow a road so the planners ran it over this newly built suspension bridge.

This is part of the roof structure of a tunnel over one of the Munich ringroads seen from the newly built suspension bridge that carries the tram line over the road.

Domagkstrasse

Not all the stops on the new Line 23 have the same style as Munchner Freiheit. The line serves an area of Munich with lots of new residential and commercial developments and this is much more typical of the stops along the way.

Curves

The cold weather that's been hitting central Europe has made me a bit reluctant to get out take pictures but today I headed out to travel on the new Tram Line 23. Here's is another, more abstract, shot of the Munchner Freiheit terminus.

Candidplatz

Candidplatz, also on U1, is probably the most colourful and decorative station on the entire system.

Wettersteinplatz

Still on U1, this is Wettersteinplatz. This also makes a strong black and white image but I decided to stick with colour.

Waiting

Fröttmaning used to be the terminus for the U6 line and is still the site of the U-Bahn engineering works, hence the line up of trains here.

For train nerds, all three types of train in use on the network are visible in this picture. Most of the units are Type A, recognisable by the 3 panel front windscreen. The unit to the right of the group of four with the single windscreen is a Type B, while the traqin on the extreme left and set a little further back is a Type C.

I took this picture on a bright sunny day; the haziness is a result of shooting through a thick perspex panel on a parallel walkway to the one in the picture.

Red Stripe

Germany's high speed trains run at up to 300 kph across the country. The trains, operated by Deutsche Bahn, are known as ICE trains and with their familiar red stripe are one of the best known brands in Germany.

The lead company in manufaturing the trains is Siemens - a German company - who are the exclusive manufacturer for the latest versions of the ICE 3. Under the 'Velaro' name Siemens have also sold versions of these trains to Spain, Russia and China.

In an age when it seems that most of the Western world's business seems to involve smoke and mirrors with preten money there is something admirable about Germany's commitment to building 'stuff'.
