Frauenkirche 2
Probably the most famous building in Munich, the city's Cathedral dominates the skyline and features on everything from book marks to beer mugs.The building dates from the late 15th century and was built in the high gothic style. The original design envisaged pointed spires on top of the towers but these were never built and the domes were eventually added around 30 years after the church was consecrated.
The south tower (on the right of this image) is accessible and provide excellent views over the city. Since the picture was taken the north tower has been enveloped in scaffolding for restoration work which has the look of a very long term project.
Like most of Munich's central buildings the church was heavily damaged during the second world war and was gradually restored over the following years.

Saint
The Frauenkirche is lined with side chapels, sometimes more ornate and elaborate than the main church. This statue of a saint decorated one of these side chapels. I had to shoot through the bars since the chapel was closed. The statue was bathed in a warm glow from the light coming through the stained glass window.15 May 2009
