Munich Photography Club

Munich is flat. Even from the top of this very small hill it is possible to look down on the city. The hill was created from the materials excavated to create Riemer Park. These folks are part of our expat photography group that meets up every couple of weeks.

Doors

These are entrance doors to Munich's main exhibition centre at Riem. In a very angular building the curves of the door stand out as does the bright band of red from the barrier.

Purple

I'm not normally a fan of flower shots - especially my own - but I made an exception for this one. I have no idea what kind of plants these are; I saw a bed of them in a garden in the Riem park.

Riem Park

A view of the flat expanses of Riem park in the east of the city. It's built on the site of the old Munich airport and seems to have been designed to replicate some of the shapes and patterns of an airfield. I have heard some people criticise it for being too uniform butI like itssimplicity.

This is another view of the tower of the Riem church centre. To the left is the Catholic St Florian's church; to the right the Protestant Sophienkirche.

The redevelopment of Riem included the construction of a new church centre. Instead of building separate churches the Catholics and Protestants of Munich decided to create a shared church centre, while retaining separate worship areas. To the Catholics it is known as St Florian's; to the Protestants it is Sophienkirche.

Dandelion

Before Franz Josef Strauß Airport opened in 1992 the city's airport was at Riem in the east of the city. A comprehensive redevelopment plan for the Riem area was drawn up with the new Munich Exhibition Centres and Trade Fair at its core.

The plan also included a new park which was designed by French landscape architect Gilles Vexlard and created between 1997 and 2005. This sculpture stands near the lake. When I first saw it I was reminded of a dandelion ready to shed its seeds. I have been told that it is actually a "multi-directional multi-frequency cubical quad antenna." I'm sticking with my dandelion image.
