Over the Bridge

A couple stop to feed the ducks in the lake. At least they still have some clear water to swim in. It's hard to see at this size, but the woman on the left is looking on sternly. I don't know whether she thinks the ducks should be left to fend for themselves or whether the couple on the bridge said something she didn't approve of.

Style

Another player I took a few shots of as he made his delivery. This one caught him in this fantastic pose.

The Player

I took a series of this elderly gentleman as he lined his shot up and sent it down the rink. This was the best of them.

Watching

Thanks to an anonymous comment left a couple of days ago I now know that this is sport is called Eisstockschießen. You can read all about it - in German - at eisstock online.

Here, a group of players study the lie of ice stocks as they wait for the next one to arrive.

Kids playing in the fountain in Karlsplatz. This was taken in July. Now the fountains have been switched off and in a little while the square will be covered with an ice rink.

Munich Photography Club

Munich is flat. Even from the top of this very small hill it is possible to look down on the city. The hill was created from the materials excavated to create Riemer Park. These folks are part of our expat photography group that meets up every couple of weeks.

Happy

This older couple were walking by laughing as I was about to switch lenses. I grabbed this shot of them refelcted in a window as they passed.

Lazy Afternoon

The flood plains of the River Isar near Thalkirchen are a popular spot for relaxing. The surface isn't exactly inviting, consisting mostly of stones and gravel, but that doesn't stop musicians, sunbathers, barbequers (if that's a word) and others like this couple.

Much of the river further north of here towards the city centre is currently being redeveloped as part of the Isar plan, a long term project to enhance the river's environment.

Friends

On the walkway over the rail lines at the Fröttmaning U-Bahn stop I passed these three men and moments later heard them laughing uproariously. I turned and took this picture - a genuine snapshot.

The Seller

Some exhibitors at the Frühlingsfest fleamarket had tables bending under the weight of their offerings; others seemed to have brought along only a handful of random items from home. This exhibitor was one of the latter. As well as having little to sell, his stall was also on the edge of the market with much less passing traffic. His expression was stiking in its own right, but all the more so since it seemed so out of keeping with his cheery hat.

The Buyers

Every year Frühlingsfest - the Spring Festival -takes place at the Theresienwiese. It's a mini version of Oktoberfest with beer tents, funfair rides and fireworks.

For one day only at the start of the Festival you can visit Bavaria's bigggest fleamarket with over 2,000 exhibitors selling everything imaginable. The most exotic item I saw on offer was a digeridoo.

These two were more interested in something a little more mundane - old vinyl LP's. They stood side by side, oblivious of each other and everything else, patiently searching through the thousands of records spread across this exhibitors table. I moved away before they did so I don't know if either of them ever found a bargain.

Lenbachhaus

The Lenbachhaus is one of Munich's finest museums. The museum has an extensive collection of works by Kandinsky and the Blue Rider group, as well as material by contemporary artists. If you haven't already visited, though, don't get too excited; the Museum closed in March for extensive renovations and isn't scheduled to reopen until 2012.

This picture was taken during my first visit to the museum. A number of the rooms displaying the works of the artists of the Blue Rider group are painted in these very strong colours; others have been designed by contemporary artists who have displayed at the Lenbachhaus.

The 'model' just happened to walk into view as I was composing the image and adopted this great pose.

Stroke

I watched these two boys trying to row their boat on the lake at Olympiapark. They couldn't get the oars co-ordinated and spent most of their time veering from side to side and going round in circles. I caught this picture of them from a bridge overlooking the lake while they were on their way back. By this time it looked like they were no longer having fun.

The Cyclist

The Pfälzer Weinstube is one of the few places in Munich where there is no beer on the menu, only a variety of German wines. The restaurant is in the Residenz and faces onto Odeonsplatz where outdoor tables line the pavement.

I was originally trying to capture the customers chatting and watching the world go by, before I realised that the many passing cyclists might add something to the image.

This one worked particularly well. As well as the colourful bike and the glance across, I thought the contrast between the young, fast-moving woman on the bike and the older, slighly downcast looking gentleman passing on the pavement was striking.

As someone pointed out, I chopped the bottom of the wheels off her bike, but otherwise this turned out to be a very pleasing image.

The Accordionist

This is one of the may accordion playing buskers in Munich. He was well placed in the middle of Neuhauserstraße, Munich's main shopping street.

This was one of a number of photographs I took of this performer. In each case he had this slightly distance look, as if his music was taking him back to another place.
