Many of the churches in central Munich were badly damaged during the Second World War and then meticulously reconstructed. The original Herz Jesu church in Neuhausen was one of these. However, a fire in 1994 totally destroyed the reconstructed church.
At this point the church authorities decided to launch an architectural competition to design a new church to be built on the same site. This striking and original building is the result.

That's a church? Fantastic! I really like it.
Any chance you can take photos inside?
Hi Hilda. There are some more pictures of the church on my other blog: http://olliinmunich.blogspot.com/2008/08/herz-jesu-kirche.html
I plan to go back at some point an retake interior shots now I have a better lens to work with and I'm sure one or two of them will appear here.
The God Delusion powers its way into the 21st Century!
It is really original!
Ausgezeichnet! Love the building - waiting to see some interior shots, too! Herrlich!
Thanks all. Interior shots might have to wait for a return visit - I'm not happy with any of the existing ones. Watch this space.
Delusion or not some great architecture and a building that says something about the convictions of its builders/users.
