The Baroque Theatinerkirche was commissioned by the Bavarian royal family in 1662 to celebrate the birth of Max Emanuel, the crown prince. The church was designed by the Italian architect Agostino Barelli and completed by his successor as court architect Enrico Zuccalli. Zucalli was responsible for the two towers which were not part of Barelli's original plan.
The church dominates Odeonsplatz, one of the major public squares in Munich. Across the square from the church is the Hofgarten, free of street lights and other distractions, from where I took this picture.
Leif, it's interesting that when you stand in the square in front of the church it doesn't look anywhere near as dramatic as this. I think the abundance of street lights and other lights tend to reduce the imact.
Taken from this quite unlit area you see the real impact of the floodlighting.
Hilda, I've only just found out about the theme days. Thanks for the info.

Great night shot of the Theatiner Church! They must have some HUGE spotlight to illumine it that well! Fabulous! Ausgezeichnet!
Fantastic image.
Beautiful! The light is just perfect!
This would have been a fantastic post for the August 1 theme day ;)
Thanks.
