Across the way from the synagogue and still on Jakobsplatz is the Munich city museum. The recently opened permanent exhibition, Typically Munich, tells the story of the city from its founding in 1158 to the 1970's. Tucked away on the top floor is a fantastic dispay of marionettes from puppet theatre and old fairground attractions. The museum also has excellent changing photographic exhibitions and, in a separate building, a very comprehensive survey of the city's Nazi past. If you are ever in Munich it is definitely worth visiting.
