This equestrian statue of Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria (1573-1651) stands in the centre of Wittelsbacherplatz, a neo-classical city square designed by Leo von Klenze who was court architect to Ludwig I (1786-1868).
The model for the statue was created by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldson and the statue itself was cast in bronze by local boy Johann Baptist Stiglmaier who was repsonsible for a number of other statues in the city. It was unveiled in 1839.
