The gravel paths of the Hofgarten are home to Munich's petanque players - though I'm never sure if I should call it petanque or boules or something else. In the spring, summer and autumn, often despite the weather, there are always a few groups playing; on sunny days two sides of the garden are lined with players. Quite a few bring tables and chairs, piucnic hampers, crates of beer and bottles of wine and are there for the day.
